AGILE Project Advocacy Visits to Daura and Katsina Emirates

On September 25th and 26th, 2024, the AGILE Project team in Katsina, led by the State Project Coordinator, conducted advocacy visits to the Emir of Katsina and the Emir of Daura. The visits aimed to seek the Emirs’ support in advancing the project’s mission of empowering adolescent girls across the state through education.

Key Outcomes:

  1. Strengthened High-Level Support for Girls’ Education: Both the Emir of Katsina and the Emir of Daura expressed their full commitment to supporting the AGILE Project. Their endorsement is expected to enhance the visibility and credibility of the project, promoting greater acceptance and participation in the initiative across the state.
  2. Increased Advocacy for Girls’ Enrollment: The Emirs pledged to use their influence to advocate for higher school enrollment rates for girls throughout Katsina State. This support from traditional leadership is likely to address cultural barriers that have historically impeded girls’ access to education, leading to increased enrollment and retention rates in schools.
  3. Reinforcement of Cultural and Societal Change: The Emirs’ statements on the importance of educating girls for both personal and state development underscore the potential for societal shifts in attitudes toward girls’ education. The commitment of traditional leaders to eliminate cultural norms that hinder girls’ educational opportunities will play a crucial role in fostering a more inclusive educational environment.
  4. Improved Community Engagement: The advocacy visits are expected to strengthen community involvement in the AGILE Project. The Emirs’ public backing will likely galvanize support from local leaders, parents, and communities, further promoting the importance of girls’ education across Katsina State.

Expected Long-Term Impact:

  • Increased Enrollment and Retention of Girls in Schools: The advocacy from the Emirs is expected to drive a significant increase in school enrollment and retention for girls across Katsina, particularly in areas where cultural barriers have previously hindered access to education.
  • Cultural Shift in Perceptions of Girls’ Education: The involvement of traditional leaders in promoting girls’ education is anticipated to facilitate a gradual cultural shift, making education for girls more widely accepted and valued.
  • Enhanced Project Sustainability: The partnership with the Emirates will contribute to the long-term sustainability of the AGILE Project by embedding its objectives within the fabric of local communities and leadership structures.
