Digital Literacy: Transforming Students’ Educational Journeys in Katsina State

Digital literacy has become a cornerstone of modern education in Katsina State. Through the support of the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project, schools are now equipped with devices and digital learning resources that empower students to learn, explore, and lead in a technology-driven world.

“When students are exposed to technology early, they gain the confidence to shape their own future.”

From Digital Literacy to Higher Education – The Story of Sirika

Sirika, a student from Family Support Programme School Katsina, discovered her passion for technology through a digital literacy program supported by the AGILE Project.
Her exposure to computer studies and hands-on learning motivated her to pursue a degree in Computer Science at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University.

Today, Sirika stands as a proud example of how foundational digital education can lead to lifelong academic and professional growth.

Re-Enrolling Married Students through the AGILE Device Provision Initiative

Through AGILE’s device distribution initiative, married students who once dropped out have found renewed hope and opportunity to continue their education.

Meet three inspiring examples:

  • Khadija Abubakar, a young mother, returned to school after gaining access to digital devices that made learning flexible and manageable alongside her family duties.
  • Aisha Isiya overcame early marriage challenges to rejoin school, motivated by the ability to learn digitally at her own pace.
  • Asmau Yau Abdullahi balanced her education and home life, using technology to rebuild her learning journey and empower her peers.

Impact Highlights:

  • 📈 Increased re-enrollment among married students
  • 💻 Improved access to learning materials
  • 👩‍🏫 Empowerment of women to champion education in their communities

Competitions and Innovation in Digital Literacy

Katsina students are not just learning—they are excelling nationally and internationally.

Achievements include:

  • Participation of 20 schools in the Nigeria Computer Society Whizkids Competition, where Katsina secured second place nationally.
  • 5 schools joined the National Information Technology Girls Competition (2024), with 1 school finishing as 2nd runner-up.
  • Launch of a pilot training in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, engaging 40 students from Family Support Secondary School Katsina in August 2024.

These programs are supported by the Katsina State Directorate of Information and Communication Technology, ensuring students gain exposure to modern innovations and STEM fields.
